- Veterans and Canadian Armed Forces Fare Type
Veterans and members of the Canadian Armed Forces can ride for free on UP Express when travelling with their Veteran’s Service Card or a Canadian Military Service ID. This includes regular and reserve force members.
How to take advantage of the new fare type
You just need to make sure you have your Veteran’s Service Card or a Canadian Military Service ID whenever you are travelling on UP Express to qualify for free travel.
If you are carrying your valid ID after January 1, there is no need to tap your PRESTO card. If you do, you will be charged a standard fare.
Accepted National Defense Identification (NDI) cards include:
- Valid permanent Canadian Forces Identification Card - NDI 20
- Canadian Armed Forces Veteran Service Card - NDI 75
- Temporary National Defense Identification Card - NDI 10
Veterans who do not have a Veteran's Service Card can apply for one through Veterans Affairs.
Remembrance Day and Warriors' Day
In addition to Veterans and CAF members riding UP Express for free year-round, they can have one companion travel with them for free on Remembrance Day (November 11) and Warriors’ Day (first Sunday of CNE).
Immediate family members of deceased veterans may also ride for free if carrying something to identify their relations to the late veteran, such as service papers or an identification card.
